Proof of eligibility

Part of the standard procedure, the driving instructor would ask you to show your learner’s permit or student license before proceeding further. While they won’t ask for it every time, you should still carry it along for every driving lesson.

Dual car controls

When you are taking a professional driving lesson in Midland, the car used will have dual car controls. This is primarily to keep you safe in case of an emergency.

The cockpit drill

Once you are behind the wheels, the instructor will start by explaining a set of instructions. Starting by helping you set up the car’s seat, mirrors and steering wheel as per your comfort level. The instructor will then explain about basic controls:

  • The seat belt
  • Turning on the engine
  • The ABC – Accelerator, Brake and clutch
  • About gears and how to engage them
  • Handbrake
  • Checking blind spots
  • Indicators

They might discuss other controls such as windscreen wipers, parking lights etc. or may leave that for later.

It is important to pay attention to these instructions and soak in as much information as possible. While it may seem daunting, remember the instructor is an expert, relax your nerves and concentrate on driving.

The first lesson is more about getting you to accustom to the car and its control and thus you will be driving in straight lines in order to learn how to control your speed and position on the road.

The best of drivers have had their own struggles balancing the clutch, accelerator and brake equation.

It is important to remember that you are there to learn and everyone has their own learning curve. Do not stress yourself, if things don’t work in one go. Relax and allow your instructor to teach you how it’s done.
